Easy Style Tips for Moms

Since having kids, do you feel like you just don’t have the time or energy to put into looking cute and pulled together anymore? For a lot of moms—especially new moms—fashion is one of the first things to get pushed to the back burner. And I totally get it…with all the things we have going on on a daily basis, spending time on ourselves to look put together seems like a low priority. But the truth is, spending just a few extra minutes in the morning to put some effort into your appearance can make a huge difference in how you feel about yourself and how you carry on the rest of your day.

Here are some easy style tips to help you put a little extra effort into your getting-ready routine so you can feel more polished in minimal time!

Clothing

You need to get dressed every morning, so why not try putting on something other than yoga pants? If you’re going to put on pants anyway, how about opting for a cute pair of jeans instead? Or make it even easier on yourself and go for a one-piece maxi dress or jumpsuit. Voila! Instant outfit!

I find if I think of an outfit the night before, then there is less decision fatigue (and less temptation to reach for the yoga pants) when it’s time to start getting ready in the morning. Decide on a top & bottom combo or a dress/jumpsuit for the next day and either make a mental note or set it aside somewhere in your closet. Then, there will be no time wasted sorting through your clothes in the morning.

Next, put on some cute shoes. Something other than exercise sneakers or flip flops. Shoes can make or break your outfit, so make a stylish statement with a nice pair of flats, sandals or boots.

Finally, add one to two accessories to really make the outfit pop. A cute belt, a pair of earrings or a necklace can give your look that little extra sparkle. You’ll be amazed by what a difference a piece of jewelry can add!

Makeup

Personally, I rarely leave the house without a full face of makeup on. I just feel more confident and put together when I do. However, most of my girlfriends wear very little or no makeup on a daily basis. While both routes are totally fine, I feel like there is a happy medium that most of us can do to brighten things up a bit and have us looking and feeling our best.

Think about what features you like to highlight most and what features could use a little help with makeup. For me, I have very sparse eyebrows and eyelashes so an eyebrow pencil and mascara are a must. Maybe you have full brows and great skin, so a swipe of mascara and a pop of color on your lips is all you need. Think about what beauty products give you the most bang for your buck and create a simple 5-minute makeup routine that will give you that extra glow without a big time investment. For example, my 5-minute face would look like this: a lightweight moisturizing foundation (this one is my current fave), followed by concealer for under my eyes, eyebrow pencil for brows, mascara and blush. On days you have a little extra time you could add extras like eyeliner, eyeshadow and/or bronzer.

Hair

Most of us don’t have a lot of time to style our hair everyday, so having a few go-to styles and accessories are the best and easiest way to look polished and keep your locks under control. If there’s no time to shower, dry shampoo is your best friend. It’s a great way to get rid of any oiliness and add a little extra volume. These (this one and this one) are the two I’ve been using a lot lately and I find they work well (and smell pretty good!) for the price. For dry ends, I also like to use a leave in styling oil to tame frizziness, like this one from CHI. After brushing through with dry shampoo and/or styling oil, you can leave it down and go, or try a few of these easy styles to change it up a bit:

Messy bun: All you need is an elastic band (and maybe some bobby pins) to achieve this casual-chic look. (Browse Pinterest for allll the tutorials.)

Ponytail: An easy classic. Use a regular elastic band, or take it up a notch with a cute scrunchie or scarf.

Pinned back: Sweep some hair back or to the side with a pretty clip.

Smooth and sleek: Add a stylish headband to tame flyaways and keep hair out of your face.
