Quick & Easy DIY Christmas Card Holder

Hi friends! It’s so hard to believe Christmas is less than a week away! The kids are out of school now and we are enjoying the time off and soaking up all the fun of Christmastime with movies and hot cocoa, playing games, seeing lights, and spending time with friends. And we’re also enjoying receiving all the wonderful holiday cards from friends and family in the mail. So much so that I needed to find a new way to display them all! So today, I want to share this easy DIY Christmas card holder that you can copy to create a display for your own home.

Here’s the final product:

Pretty cute, right? This is actually an upgrade from one I made a few years past, but this version is better because it can hold more!

Here’s a picture of the previous card holder:

I love how it looks, but being narrower, there wasn’t as much space for hanging the cards like there is with one that is wider. So this year, I found a cute new sign from Michael’s that is longer, so I was able to add another ribbon for displaying the cards. I just love how it turned out!

Supplies Needed:

  • Holiday themed sign, frame or artwork (landscape size is better)
  • Festive ribbon
  • Mini clothespins
  • String, twine or ribbon for hanging
  • 3M command hook
  • Glue gun
  • Scissors

If you can’t find a premade sign you like, you can also get creative with using a lightweight horizontal frame and printing out holiday artwork to go in it, using a lightweight chalkboard sign, or creating your own!

How to Make Your DIY Christmas Card Holder

Step 1:

Determine how many strands of ribbon you would like to hang from your sign and cut the strands to the desired length.

I also like to cut a little triangle at the bottom of the strands to give it a nice finished look:

Step 2:

Turn your sign around and measure the back, making evenly spaced marks for where you want your ribbon to go.

Step 3:

Hot glue the ribbons to the back of the sign, making sure that the right side of the ribbon is facing toward the front of the sign.

Step 4:

Determine how you want to hang your card holder. If your sign has one hook on the back, depending on the style, you may be able to simply hang it directly on the command hook. If it has two hooks, or the kind of ridged hook meant for nails, you may need to create a loop or tie a string or ribbon to either end so you can hang it. (Or, if you are hanging it on the wall and want to use nails, you can go with that option as well.) The sign on my first card holder had a single hook that I could just hang on the command hook, but the new one has two nail hooks on either end, so I created a hanger using red and white twine.

Step 5:

Hang it up! Decide where you want your command hook (or nails) to go, and then put it up for display. I hang mine on the door of our coat closet which is in a central location so it is easily visible and makes the space look festive. Once it is on the wall, you can add your Christmas cards to the ribbon using mini clothespins.

I’m so excited I finally have a way to display all the Christmas cards at once in one beautiful, easy to see display!

I hope this helps give you some ideas and inspiration for creating one of your own! Let me know in the comments if you try it out!

Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas!

With love,
